Thursday, July 3rd, 9 am – 4 pm with 1 hour for lunch. Cost is $225.

An artist’s goal is to interpret an experience in a way that it transcends the obvious and literal. Painting is about asking questions. This workshop will cover the basics of working on location, including composition and design, good color, and fleeting light. The instructor will give a demo in the morning, and work with students individually during the afternoon. All experience levels welcome.

Supplies: Plein air oil painting supplies including easel, canvases, and all day weather and sun protection.

Merrell is a Signature Artists Member of the California Arts Club. He has had solo exhibitions at The Forbes Gallery in New York City and the American Legacy Fine Arts in Pasadena, CA. Tuesday, July 8th, 7 pm – 11 pm. Cost is $150.

Join celebrated instructor, Susiehyer, for an evening of painting on the light of the moon! Begin with a casual lecture about nocturne painting and be ready to begin painting at dusk. This will be a fine veining of experimentation with both our materials and the experience of painting outdoors at night. The class will conclude with a  group critique of the paintings. It will be helpful for participants to look at the nocturnes of Frank Tenney Johnson, Frederic Remington and others before the workshop.

Supplies: Easle, headlamp, warm evening clothes, and a few canvases for exercises.

Susiehyer has won numerous awards as both a studio and a plein air painter. Her work has been seen in Southwestern Art Magazine, as a featured artists in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and was chosen for the celebrated ‘Landscape of Colorado’ by Ann Daley of the Denver Arts Museum.

Thursday, July 10th, 9 am – 12 pm. Cost is $65.

This half-day workshop will investigate the two main areas for correcting your work. Color, temperature, and value will be the main theme as Bill takes a study and develops it into a larger work. Design and palette management will be areas of inquiry. This workshop is suitable for all levels and will be primarily an artist-lead demonstration.

Supplies: Plein air oil painting supplies including easel, canvases, and all day weather and sun protection.

Bill Gallen currently resides in New Mexico where he enjoys painting landscapes, particularly on location pieces. July 6th, 7th, and 8th. 9 am – 4:30 pm. Cost is $425.

As the foundations of plein air painting are presented step-by-step, you will learn how to simplify complex landscapes into “simple pieces” dealing with color, value, and temperature. Painting on location, taking the studio outside brings its own set of challenges. In the outdoors, things change quickly; the natural world is in constant motion. Working outdoors will train you to work with haste and to be more spontaneous in your painting!

Sahli’s hands-on guidance and instruction in how to meet the challenges of plein air painting will build your confidence; and his personalized teaching method will ensure everyone’s success! The Crested Butte Workshop offers a limited class size, which ensures more individual attention and the wonderful atmosphere of artistic camaraderie associated with Don Sahli Workshops.
